Melatonin-SR

30 Vegan Capsules · 5mg Sustained-Release Melatonin · 100mg L-Theanine · 1 capsule per night

Evidence: High Sustained-Release Sleep Onset & Maintenance

This is for you if

  • You can fall asleep but wake at 2 or 3 a.m. and can't get back to sleep
  • You travel across time zones and want help re-syncing your circadian rhythm
  • You're a shift worker dealing with disrupted sleep schedules
  • You've tried immediate-release melatonin and the early-morning crash made it impractical

What changes, and when

  • Night 1 Sleep onset typically improves; sleep maintenance benefit develops over the first few nights
  • Wk 1–2 Sleep architecture stabilises; waking events reduce in frequency
  • Wk 2-4 Circadian regulation re-establishes (particularly relevant for shift work or jet lag recovery)
  • Ongoing Use cyclically rather than continuously — see Dosage & Rationale for the right pattern

Note: Melatonin is not designed for indefinite daily use. It's most useful as a targeted tool for specific circadian problems — travel, shift work, late-evening training disrupting sleep onset, or a transient sleep disruption — used cyclically. For chronic daily sleep difficulty, the underlying issue is usually elsewhere (sleep hygiene, caffeine timing, magnesium status, stress load) and addressing it directly is more useful than indefinite melatonin use.

Dosage & Rationale

1
Capsule
1 Capsule · 30 minutes before bedtime · with water

Why one hour before bed, not 30 minutes? Sustained-release melatonin needs longer to start releasing than immediate-release. The 6–8 hour release curve begins about 45–60 minutes after intake, mimicking the body's natural overnight melatonin profile. Taking it too close to bedtime means the curve doesn't catch the sleep-onset window properly.

Cyclical use, not necessarily daily indefinite use. Melatonin works best as a tool to re-establish a healthy sleep cycle, not as a daily indefinite supplement. Many adults take it nightly for 2–4 weeks to reset their cycle, then reduce frequency or stop entirely. Others use it situationally — during jet lag, travel, or short periods of stress-disrupted sleep. There is no required minimum duration; daily long-term use is also safe at this dose.

Loading Period: Why 5mg, and is it the right dose for me?

5mg is in the upper-middle range of melatonin doses. It's appropriate for adults with established sleep difficulty (waking at 3 AM, early morning waking, significant circadian disruption). For adults wanting gentle first-time sleep support, a lower dose (0.3mg–1mg) may be sufficient — but those doses are typically only available in compounded form. If you find 5mg too strong (morning grogginess, vivid dreams), you can split the capsule (the SR granules tolerate splitting) or use less frequently.

Take 30 minutes before intended sleep onset. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery for at least 5 hours after taking. Consult your healthcare provider before use if you are pregnant, lactating, on prescription medication, or have any chronic medical condition.
Anticoagulant medication: Melatonin can mildly affect blood clotting at higher doses. If you're on warfarin or similar, inform your physician before starting.
Immunosuppressant medication: Melatonin has mild immunomodulatory effects. Adults on immunosuppressants (post-transplant, autoimmune treatment) should consult their physician.
Diabetes medication: Melatonin can mildly affect glucose regulation. Adults on diabetes medication should monitor blood glucose for the first few weeks of supplementation.
Antidepressant and anti-anxiety medication: Speak with your physician — melatonin interacts with serotonin and GABA pathways, and combining with psychiatric medication needs clinical oversight.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Limited safety data. Consult your physician.
Children: Not formulated for or recommended for children without paediatric guidance. Children's circadian rhythms differ from adults and chronic melatonin use during developmental years has limited long-term safety data.
Driving and operating machinery: Do not drive or operate machinery for at least 5 hours after taking. Plan to be in bed within 30–60 minutes of the dose.
