ZMA

60 Vegan Capsules · Magnesium Glycinate + Zinc Citrate + P5P (Active B6) · Overnight Recovery

Evidence: Moderate Vegan Recovery-Focused ZMA Stack

This is for you if

  • You train hard 5+ days a week and want overnight recovery support beyond magnesium alone
  • You train fasted or eat a low-zinc diet (limited meat, seafood, legumes, seeds)
  • You sweat heavily — zinc and magnesium are lost in sweat
  • You want active-form B6 (P5P) rather than pyridoxine HCl found in most ZMA products

What changes, and when

  • Wk 1–2 Sleep quality often improves — easier onset, deeper sleep
  • Wk 2–4 Zinc status reaches steady state; recovery between sessions feels measurably better
  • Ongoing The mineral foundation holds; daily intake supports continued heavy-training tolerance

Key Actives per Serving (1 Capsule)

  • Magnesium Glycinate (bisglycinate chelate)286mg
  • Zinc Citrate 17mg
  • Vitamin B6 Pyridoxal 5-Phosphate 1.9mg

Key clinical outcomes supported

  • Overnight neuromuscular recovery from heavy training
  • Sleep quality and parasympathetic nervous system activation
  • Zinc status maintenance in athletes losing zinc through sweat
  • Co-factor support for protein metabolism and amino acid utilisation (B6's role)

Dosage & Rationale

2
Capsule
2 Capsules daily · post meal · with a glass of water

Why post meal rather than the classical empty-stomach protocol? The original 1999 ZMA studies recommended empty-stomach pre-sleep dosing to maximise zinc absorption — based on zinc oxide and calcium-free spacing concerns. The Unived formulation uses zinc citrate (well-absorbed even with food) and magnesium bisglycinate (also food-stable), making the classical protocol unnecessary. Post-meal dosing reduces any GI sensitivity, improves adherence, and doesn't compromise absorption with these specific forms. Calcium-containing meals are still worth avoiding within the dosing window — see FAQ.

Why evening rather than morning? Magnesium glycinate supports the parasympathetic shift that improves sleep quality. B6 in active form (P5P) supports neurotransmitter synthesis, including serotonin-to-melatonin conversion overnight. Together, the evening dosing positions these actives where they do most of their work — during the body's overnight recovery window.

Loading Period: 1–2 weeks for sleep effects · 3–6 weeks for full mineral status shift

Magnesium effects on sleep typically appear within the first two weeks. Zinc status changes accrue over 3–6 weeks of consistent intake. Effects on overnight hormonal markers (in adults who had documented deficits) typically show up at 4–8 weeks of sustained use.

Prescription medication interactions:

  • Tetracycline and quinolone antibiotics: Zinc and magnesium can reduce absorption. Take ZMA at least 2 hours apart from these antibiotics.
  • Thyroid medication (levothyroxine): Magnesium can affect absorption. Take ZMA at least 4 hours apart from thyroid medication.
  • Bisphosphonates (osteoporosis medication): Magnesium reduces absorption. Separate by 2 hours minimum.

Iron supplementation: Zinc and iron compete for absorption. If you also take iron, separate by 2 hours.

Calcium-containing meals: Calcium and zinc compete for absorption pathways. Within the dosing window, avoid milk-heavy meals or calcium supplements taken at the same time.

Already taking standalone magnesium: ZMA contains 286mg elemental magnesium per serving. Combining with a separate Magnesium Glycinate product results in cumulative magnesium intake. For most adults this remains within safe daily limits, but worth reviewing if you're targeting specific magnesium status.

Pregnancy: Zinc and magnesium needs rise during pregnancy. The doses in ZMA are within safe limits, but most prenatal vitamins already contain these — consult your gynaecologist about total daily intake.

Long-term zinc supplementation note: Daily zinc supplementation above 40mg can suppress copper absorption over months of use. The 17mg dose in ZMA is well below this threshold, but if you're stacking with other zinc-containing products (some multivitamins), check the cumulative total.
