Alpha Lipoic Acid

Alpha Lipoic Acid

60 Vegan Capsules · 600mg ALA + Full B-Complex + Chromium · 30 Servings

Evidence: High ALA + B-Complex Synergy Metabolic & Nerve Health

This is for you if

  • You have diabetes or pre-diabetes (under physician guidance) and want supplementation that supports glucose metabolism and nerve health together
  • You experience peripheral nerve symptoms — tingling, numbness, mild paraesthesia — and want evidence-backed support
  • You're an athlete in heavy training and want a universal antioxidant (ALA works in both water and fat-soluble environments)
  • You're over 50 and want comprehensive metabolic and nerve maintenance support

What changes, and when

  • Wk 1–2 B-vitamins reach steady state — daily energy metabolism often the first felt shift
  • Wk 3–6 ALA's antioxidant and metabolic effects begin to accrue; insulin sensitivity markers improve in pre-diabetic adults
  • Wk 8-12 Nerve health endpoints (in adults with peripheral neuropathy) show measurable improvement
  • 3+ 6 Months Compounding benefits across metabolic, antioxidant, and nerve health markers

Note: The 600mg daily dose is at the lower end of the therapeutic range studied for diabetic neuropathy (600–1800mg/day in the ALADIN, NATHAN, and SYDNEY trials). For correction of established peripheral neuropathy or severe insulin resistance, your physician may recommend a higher therapeutic dose for an initial period. This product is calibrated for daily maintenance and prevention rather than acute correction.

Ingredients & Supplement Facts

Ingredient & Form Dose Rationale
Alpha Lipoic Acid 600mg

Ziegler et al. 2011 (NATHAN-1): 600 mg/day improved diabetic neuropathy symptoms. Ansar et al. 2011: improved HOMA-IR in type 2 diabetics.

Chromium Picolinate 50mcg

Anderson et al. 1997: improved glucose and insulin in type 2 diabetics at 200–1000 mcg/day. Cefalu & Hu 2004 review: trivalent chromium safe and effective for glucose homeostasis.

L-Methyltetrahydrofolate 300DFE

Pietrzik et al. 2010: comparable plasma folate response to folic acid without unmetabolised folic acid accumulation. Obeid et al. 2013: preferred form in MTHFR C677T variants.

B-Complex Blend 100% RDA

All eight B-vitamins delivered at 100% Indian RDA in active or directly-bioavailable forms. B12 is methylcobalamin (not cyanocobalamin) — the bioactive form the body uses directly. B9 (folate) is L-5-MTHF — the active form that bypasses the MTHFR enzyme conversion required by synthetic folic acid. The other B-vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7) are in standard, well-absorbed forms because conversion is not the limiting factor for those. The combination is calibrated for daily maintenance, particularly relevant for vegetarians, adults over 40, and anyone with elevated metabolic demands (athletes, those under sustained stress).

Dosage & Rationale

2
Capsule
2 Capsules daily · before or with breakfast · with a glass of water

Why before breakfast, ideally? ALA absorption is reduced by approximately 30–50% when taken with food. Taking the capsules 20–30 minutes before breakfast delivers the best absorption. If taking on an empty stomach causes any GI discomfort, taking with a light breakfast is an acceptable compromise — the B-vitamins and chromium absorb well either way, and a small reduction in ALA absorption is preferable to inconsistent use.

Why morning? The B-vitamin content supports daily energy metabolism across the day. Morning dosing positions the B-vitamins where they do most of their work. ALA's antioxidant and metabolic effects accrue cumulatively regardless of timing — but morning intake makes daily compliance easier.

Why two capsules together? The 600mg ALA dose requires two capsules to deliver the clinical threshold. The full daily dose taken once provides higher peak plasma concentration than splitting across the day — and peak concentration matters for ALA's antioxidant action.

Loading Period: 2–4 weeks for metabolic effects · 8–12 weeks for nerve health endpoints.

ALA's antioxidant effects are essentially immediate at the cellular level — the felt and measurable changes accrue over weeks. Insulin sensitivity improvements in pre-diabetic adults typically show on HbA1c at 8–12 weeks. Nerve health improvements in adults with peripheral neuropathy typically accrue over 8–16 weeks of consistent intake.

Take as directed. Generally well-tolerated. Consult your healthcare provider before use if you are pregnant, lactating, on prescription medication, or have any chronic medical condition.

Diabetes medication (insulin, metformin, sulfonylureas): ALA can enhance insulin sensitivity and lower blood glucose. The combination with diabetes medication can lead to hypoglycaemia if doses aren't coordinated. If you have diabetes, consult your physician before starting — your diabetes medication may need dose adjustment, and blood glucose should be monitored carefully during the first few weeks of supplementation.

Thyroid medication (levothyroxine): ALA can mildly affect thyroid hormone metabolism. Take this product at least 4 hours apart from thyroid medication, and inform your endocrinologist if you take thyroid medication.

Chemotherapy: ALA's antioxidant properties may theoretically interfere with some chemotherapy mechanisms. If you are undergoing cancer treatment, consult your oncologist before starting ALA supplementation.

B12 deficiency masking: The folate dose can mask the symptoms of B12 deficiency in some adults. This product includes both folate and B12 to prevent this issue — but if you have a diagnosed B12 deficiency and are not addressing it through other means, ensure you discuss with your physician.

Pregnancy and lactation: Limited safety data on ALA during pregnancy. Consult your gynaecologist before use.

Methotrexate (cancer, severe psoriasis, autoimmune conditions): Methotrexate interacts with folate — the 300mcg DFE of L-5-MTHF is meaningful. Consult your physician before starting daily use.

Iron deficiency: ALA can mildly chelate metals including iron. If you are treating iron deficiency with supplementation, take iron at least 4 hours apart from ALA.

Evidence Dossier

Overall Evidence Grade HIGH · ALA Well-Established for Metabolic and Antioxidant Support

Alpha Lipoic Acid is among the most extensively studied ""universal antioxidants"". Gomes & Negrato 2014 review documents pleiotropic effects in diabetes, neuropathy, hepatic disease, and metabolic syndrome.

The 300 mg dose is the daily preventive intake supported in non-deficient populations. Higher doses (600–1200 mg) are used in clinical neuropathy protocols. Pairing with zinc and calcium-magnesium provides cofactor support for the broader antioxidant network.

Ingredient Mechanism Evidence Key Notes
Alpha Lipoic Acid Mitochondrial cofactor; regenerates vitamins C, E, and glutathione; improves insulin sensitivity and peripheral nerve function ● High
Chromium Picolinate Potentiates insulin receptor signalling; supports glucose disposal; modulates carbohydrate cravings via brain glucose sensing ● Moderate
L-Methyltetrahydrofolate Bypasses MTHFR enzyme conversion required by synthetic folic acid; supports homocysteine clearance, DNA methylation, and neural tube development ● High
B-Complex Blend B-vitamins function as essential co-factors in energy metabolism, nervous system function, methylation pathways, and red blood cell formation. Each B-vitamin has a specific enzymatic role — together they support the body's ability to convert dietary carbohydrates, fats, and proteins into usable energy, maintain neural function, regulate homocysteine levels, and support cellular replication. ● High
