Got DHA?

GENERAL NUTRITION |

Feeling sluggish, depressed, or suffering from high cholesterol? Your body may be lacking adequate amounts of an essential nutrient,Omega-3 DHA.

Omega-3 DHA is the most important of the three Omegas. It is a vital nutrient that is required for the normal growth and development of your brain, eyes, and heart, right from the day you are conceived. Omega-3 DHA comprises of 97% of the Omega-3 fats in the brain and 93% of those in the retina. This Omega-3 fatty acid is also a key component of the heart, and studies have shown that DHA plays a role in maintaining triglyceride levels, heart rate, and blood pressure. Omega-3 DHA is also known to boost your cognitive abilities. DHA is essential at every age in life.

Since your body doesn't produce DHA, you can only get your daily DHA requirement through supplements. If you think that by consuming flax seeds and walnuts, you are getting the adequate amount of Omega-3 DHA, you are mistaken. Flax seeds and walnuts only contain Omega-3 ALA which your body has to convert to DHA before absorption. The highest conversion rate has been reported at 1% in children, it is even lower in adults.

Some people consider fish as a rich source of Omega-3 DHA. This is a myth; fish feed on small marine animals that in turn feed on DHA-rich microalgae, so fish only contain Omega-3 due to their diet. Also, this is only true for fish found in certain water bodies that are microalgae-rich, such as Norwegian waters. If you are consuming fish oil, you need to know that fish is not the primary source of Omega-3 DHA, and with two-thirds of our fisheries being already depleted, soon our oceans can end up without their beautifully coloured fish.

With limited sources that deliver Omega-3 DHA it is essential to consume dietary supplements that provide this nutrient in its purest form. Your chosen Omega-3 must provide you with 300mg or more DHA per serving, the daily requirement (NIH USA) for optimal health and overall well-being. Many fish oil supplements do not disclose the amount of DHA in each capsule and may contain ocean born contaminants. A safer and purer option are Omega-3 DHA supplements derived from micro-algae.

As a vegan company committed to delivering products of the highest quality, Unived has introduced India's only vegan-certified Omega-3 DHA dietary supplement.
